VA Assistance Available for Bathroom Remodels

For many veterans, everyday tasks at home get harder over time. A service-connected injury, chronic pain or limited mobility can make a standard bathroom one of the riskiest rooms in the house. High tub walls, slippery floors and narrow doorways all raise the chance of a fall.

What many veterans don't know is that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers grants that can help pay for a safer, more accessible bathroom. Here's what's available, who qualifies and how to get started.

What VA Assistance Is Available for Bathroom Remodels?

The VA offers several programs that help pay for medically necessary home changes. For bathroom projects, the most common one is the HISA grant.

The HISA Grant

HISA stands for Home Improvements and Structural Alterations. It's a lifetime benefit that helps veterans pay for home modifications their VA doctor finds medically necessary. For bathrooms, that can include:

  • Low-threshold showers and barrier-free showers
  • Accessible sinks and counters
  • The plumbing and electrical work those upgrades need
  • You may qualify for HISA if you have a service-connected disability, or a non-service-connected condition and a service-connected disability rating of 50% or higher. Other veterans who get VA medical care may qualify for a smaller benefit.

SAH and SHA Grants

Veterans with certain severe service-connected disabilities may qualify for the larger Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) or Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grants. These can fund bigger accessibility projects, including a full bathroom remodel.

Bathroom Upgrades That May Qualify

Your VA doctor decides what's medically necessary for you. Common bathroom projects include:

  • Low-threshold showers: Curbless showers you can enter with a wheelchair, walker or shower chair
  • Tub-to-shower conversions: Swapping a high-walled tub for a low-threshold walk-in shower
  • Walk-in tubs: A watertight door, built-in seat and grab bars for safer bathing
  • Shower-to-tub conversions: For veterans who can't stand for long periods or need a therapeutic soak
  • ADA-compliant upgrades: Grab bars, wider doorways, slip-resistant floors and comfort-height toilets

The Most Important Rule: Get Approval First

This is where many veterans lose out. The VA must approve your HISA application before any work begins. The VA doesn't pay for work completed before approval, even if the project would otherwise have qualified.

After approval, the VA pays the grant to the veteran. It may pay part up front and the rest after the work is done and the final invoice is submitted. So the key is to have your paperwork in order before your project starts.

How to Apply for VA Bathroom Remodel Assistance

Step 1: Talk to Your VA Doctor

Explain the trouble you have bathing safely. Ask for a prescription that names the bathroom modification you need and explains why it's medically necessary.

Step 2: Contact Your Local VA Prosthetics Office

HISA grants are handled by your VA facility's Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service (PSAS). Ask about your eligibility, your remaining lifetime benefit and your facility's application steps.

Step 3: Gather Your Documents

A HISA application usually needs:

  • Your VA doctor's prescription
  • A completed VA Form 10-0103
  • An itemized cost estimate from your contractor
  • A color photo of the bathroom before any work
  • A signed, notarized letter from the owner if you rent

Step 4: Get a Detailed Estimate

Tips for a Smooth VA Application

  • Start early. Approval times vary by facility, so begin before your consultation.
  • Ask for a specific prescription. A prescription that names the exact modification carries more weight.
  • Keep copies of everything. Save your prescription, forms, estimates, photos and approval letter.
  • Ask for help. A family member, caregiver or Veterans Service Officer can help with paperwork.
  • Look at other benefits too. Veterans who also have Medicare or Medicaid may find more help with any remaining costs.
