The HISA grant helps veterans make their homes safer and more accessible for medical reasons. It can cover bathroom changes like low-threshold shower, accessible sinks and counters, and the plumbing and electrical work those upgrades need. HISA is a lifetime benefit, and the amount available depends on your eligibility.
You may qualify if you have:
A service-connected disability
A non-service-connected condition and a service-connected disability rating of 50% or higher
Other conditions the VA treats for eligible veterans (a smaller benefit may apply)
HSA or FSA funds, when your doctor documents medical necessity.

Important: The VA must approve your HISA application before any work begins. Once approved, the VA may pay part of the grant up front and the rest after the work is complete. Work finished before approval is not covered.
